Half Way Through Training

I have about of month left of training…..

OMG! I ONLY HAVE A MONTH LEFT OF TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!

I think coming into Peace Corps, you have this idea that your 11 weeks of training is going to thoroughly prepare you for your two years of service…it doesn’t. While I probably could pass the Language Proficiency Interview (LPI) at a Novice High Level (required), I don’t feel like I’m ready to be on my own yet. I mean, I know how to buy things at a hanoot (corner store), take a taxi, and relatively function in a basic conversation in Darjia (Moroccan Arabic). However, it’s those moments at the Dar Chabab when I don’t know how to say some random word that crossed my mind or how to give instructions to the youth or I’m sitting with my host family and I don’t understand how they are  asking that I feel like I’m useless.

I have a love/hate relationship with training. It’s a comfort zone. I know that I can rely on my teacher and other trainees to help me. I know that food is always waiting for me and clothes are always clean even if I’m not. On the other hand, I just want to be in my final site and in my apartment and integrating with my community RIGHT NOW! I want to have the language under my belt so that I’m not misunderstanding what someone is saying or asking me.

But I do have to admit…I know a lot more than I did when I arrived January 15th. I know more Darija now than I did on the 15th. I know how to plan for a Spring Camp, teach a content based English lesson, run a club activity and a camp activity.

Tr3mendous Love,
Renee
