For as long as I can remember, I have never been afraid of public speaking. I think it may have something to do with beginning raised like an only child and never having an audience to talk to, so when I did have an audience, I took advantage of it. I love public speaking.
I recently spoke to small groups of international students during their orientation week about how to use the university’s portal for email, registration, etc. At the end of the day, I felt really good. I wasn’t tired or drained and while I needed a cup of tea, my voice was fine. When I got back to the office, my coworker commented on how well I did and how knowledgeable I was. (Although, I should be knowledgeable about the portal, since I used it during my 3.5 years of undergraduate study.) I told her that I didn’t mind speaking in front of a group of people and that I enjoy it a lot.
As I was walking back to my desk, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a job where I publicly spoke to people all the time?” I would really like that kind of job. The only thing stopping me is that most of the people I’ve seen who are successful speakers are motivational speakers. They have had some kind of live changing experience that motivated them to the success they have now. I don’t think have a quarter-life crisis yet. So what would I talk about? What would people want to hear?
During my undergraduate career, I was volunteered as a UCA Ambassador. I gave campus tours to perspective students. We had a weekend training at the beginning of the year where we were split into teams and given a script. The script had any and all important statistical facts about the university and each department and building. We were also taught to add our own experiences into the tour, how to proper ask questions, and how not to bash other universities in the state. I loved giving tours to prospective students and I was able to show my pride of my school to them. Rain, snow, or shine we gave tours and while tours were better than others, I enjoyed giving all of my tours.
Anyway, this experience made me think that if a company already had the material or a script and just needed someone to present it….HIRE ME! Now, I did become a sales rep for a company one summer, which had a script, but I think I didn’t do well with that job because it was a door to door type job. There is a different kind of environment about when you’re talking to customers and needing them to buy a product the day you see them versus speaking to an audience and influencing them to do better in their life or assisting them in a workshop.
This is just one the types of jobs I would love to do. They say you should find a job that you can’t wait to wake up in the morning to start. Do you have that kind of job? What kind of job would get you out of bed every morning?
